“Chinese in America – We Are Family” at Shanghai 2010 World Expo
The Committee of 100, a strategic partner and premier-level sponsor of the USA Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, created an exhibit for the US Pavilion entitled “The Chinese in America – We are Family”. Using all forms of media and the Internet, the Committee of 100 had rallied vast numbers of Americans of Chinese descent to submit their photos to a video wall to reflect their pride in their heritage and in America. Over 88,600 unique visits were been made to the websites (www.jointhewall.org; www.comebuildthewall.org). 10,880 people uploaded their photos. Many distinguished Chinese Americans, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Steven Chen, I.M Pei, have joined the “Wall” and were featured with short profiles. The Wall project was an entirely non-profit, voluntary effort and involved contributions from over 50 community groups, Chinese language media, Ogilvy Worldwide, and other creative resources.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited the Wall Exhibit at the USA Pavilion on May 22nd and was quoted saying that: “One of the most moving displays is the tribute to the millions of Chinese Americans who have contributed to so much to the cultural and economic development of the United States.” Chinese Ambassador to U.S. Zhang Yesui sent letter of congratulation to the Committee of 100. The Chinese in America exhibit and its significance goes beyond EXPO. On July 2nd 2010, the “Chinese in America - We are family” exhibit was travelled to the United States Embassy in Beijing as part of the National Day celebration, to reflect America’s embrace of diversity. On Oct 22nd 2010, the Chinese in America exhibit was prominently shown at the Western China International Fair to highlight the importance of overseas Chinese with their worldwide contribution.
