From China to the World
2009 – Shenyang and Friends: From the Metropolitan Opera and the Juilliard School.
May 11, 2009, launched a one week initiative co-created by the Institute, the Metropolitan Opera and Juilliard School’s Young Artists Development Programs, the Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Educational master classes, panel discussions and a performance by 2007 Cardiff Singer of the World, Shenyang, took place at the Shanghai Grand Theater. He performed with his mentors and heads of the Met Opera and Juilliard Young Artists Development Programs, Ken Noda and Brian Zeger, along with 2 young colleagues from the Programs; Erin Morley and Julie Boulianne. Young Chinese composer, Huang Ruo, was commissioned to contribute a new work to the recital program.
52 young singers from across China applied and were reviewed for participation in intense master classes with Brian Zeger and Ken Noda for over 2 days at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. 20 of them who displayed the potential for international careers were selected and several hundred singers and teachers participated in the master class as audience and auditors. This was followed by a free public concert featuring the master class singers.
The Shanghai Media Group’s Arts Channel created a documentary which included interviews with soprano Renée Fleming, the MET Opera’s General Manager, Peter Gelb, Maestro James Levine and Juilliard School’s President, Joseph Polisi. It will air nationally soon in 2009.
